To Laugh Often And Much – Ralph Waldo Emerson?

by quoteman on December 18, 2017

to laugh often and much“To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch… to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!”  ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson?

Emerson gets credit from nearly everyone for having written this classic inspirational quote – one of the most inspiring, heart-warming quotes of all time. However, there’s no evidence whatsoever that he actually wrote it! In fact, according to Ralph Keyes, in his extensively  researched book, “The Quote Verifier”, there’s no record of anyone in particular having written it, or spoken it. Likewise, another variation on the quote, “He has achieved success, who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much…” – again, Emerson often gets credit for the quote, but there’s no evidence he actually came up with it. (Nor is there evidence of anyone else in particular having come up with it.)

Since Emerson has given us so many great thoughts, we might was well give him credit for it anyway.
